The Port of Grimsby and Immingham is the UK’s largest port by tonnage.

Benefiting from a prime deep-water location on the Humber Estuary, Immingham provides excellent access to the trade routes between the UK and mainland Europe and beyond.

Dry Docks and Cold Storage

Slipways at Grimsby Fish Docks provide access for vessels of up to 1,200 tonnes, and a wide range of covered and open storage is available within the port estate. Cold-store capacity of approximately 230,000 tonnes is available on, and adjacent to, the docks.

Fresh Fish from Around the World

Grimsby’s fully modernised fish market handles some 30,000 tonnes of fresh fish each year, landed not only from the local catching fleet, but also from containers arriving from Norway and Iceland, as well as overland from other UK ports. Grimsby’s Royal Dock regularly handles imports of frozen fish from Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Russia.

Innovative storage and packaging solutions for the food industry

The food industry demands extremely high quality from its storage and packaging products. Greater Grimsby is home to many world-class companies that are at the forefront of innovation, design and environmental sustainability.

The UK’s largest port complex and connections to the national motorway network, means that companies like Tri-Pack Plastics, Ultimate Packaging, QC Cartons and Styropack can supply the majority of UK and European supermarkets as well as local processors like Young’s.

Environmental concerns and traceability are addressed by local firms in close collaboration with researchers at the Grimsby Institute. The Cool Blue Box Company is just one example of this, with their unique cool boxes that are fully reusable and embedded with the latest RFID microchips.

There is a strong design sector in the area with experience of all forms of food packaging. This sector can provide the expertise and design packages to produce label designs and promotional packaging with internationally-renown firms like Teneo (UK) based in Grimsby.

Just the place for just-in-time

The Grimsby area is well suited to the just-in-time culture of the modern retail sector, nationally and internationally, by being able to provide high quality, well developed and easily accessible cold storage and distribution. Lincolnshire, “the bread basket of England”, is one of the UK’s primary farming areas. Our agricultural hinterland produces a wide range of high quality vegetables, with field-to-factory transport taking no more than 90 minutes. – Can you confirm were you got this from as I believe that we do not do much frozen veg now as it has moved south to deepest darkest Lincolnshire!

Huge cold storage facilities

Grimsby has the largest concentration of cold storage in Europe, with an enviable chilled and frozen food distribution network. This impressive infrastructure was created to service manufacturers, and includes specialist companies such as DFDS, Norbert Dentressangle, Associated Cold Stores & Transport, Quayside and Yearsley. There is more than 45 million cubic feet of public cold storage available, including the state-of-the-art, 18.72 million cubic feet regional consolidation centre, which can hold 35,000 pallets. Local specialists include O.Turner Insulation, the first UK cold store contractor to build a high bay clad rack type low temperature cold store.

UK’s Biggest Ice-Cream Store

Although

local companies use a good percentage of the cold store facilities, Grimsby also caters for companies whose products aren’t manufactured here. An example of this is that Grimsby’s cold stores handle the largest amount of ice cream in the UK.
